DANCE
The girls of Silvia Duran's Spanish Dance Group seem to get prettier every time she presents a performance. The May 30th Gala at the Suzanne Dellal Centre was no exception. The occasion was a special welcome for Michal Natan Sheinfeld who had spent a year and a half studying and dancing in Spain.
So there were the six lovely young women and a surprise: a young man (male Spanish dancers are rare in Israel). The women stepped out gracefully smiled, waved their kerchiefs and twirled their fans, clicked their castanets and made skillful play with their skirts.
Michal Natan immediately brought it with her in her solos; that lustful Spanish pride that immediately lights the stage. Though she sometimes seemed to be straining her techniques to its limits, here dramatic verve was remarkable.
YET NOBODY COULD EQUAL DURAN HERSELF IN THE ASTUTE, GLITTERING GRASP OF SPANISH PULSE, POSE AND PAUSE. HER TENDENCY TO PLUMPNESS DID NOT INTERFERE WITH HER SPEED IN TRAVEL OR TURN. HER FACILITY IN ZAPATEADO WAS AS CLEVER AS EVER. SHE RAISED THE TEMPO.
