Silvia Duran's Spanish Dance group showed some new faces at the Suzanne Dellal Theatre on the morning of December 30th. There was also more of them - eight women and one man with Duran as a sort of compere (or should we say commere)/ She bound the items together with explanations of the Spanish dance and talked about the difficulties that face the Israeli dancer who tries to master it and she also brought the house down with her demonstration of flamenco techniques.
It was Duran who showed what "duende" really means - the difference between doing a Spanish dance and being a Spanish dancer. It was to Duran's credit that even after her fascinating performance, her Company still looked engaging.
One advantage that Spanish dance programmes have over others: with one embroidered shawl hung over a chair, a stage can be suitably set for such a performance. With a half dozen swinging skirts and kerchiefs dancers with the right knowledge can create the Iberian allure. Steps that swing the hips, finger vibrations, swift turns and tiny backward jumps can conjure up the right moods well enough to make the minutes fly by enjoyably.
